Catios, yes we call them that =P, are really specifically designed with cats in mind, however, other indoor family furry friends could find them useful too as long as proper precautions are put in place.
Small dogs, for instance, would like a place to get some sunshine within the safety of an enclosed space. but dogs also like a bigger area to run around in than cats and a catio might not cut it. Hairballs are a less energetic bunch than mutts.
Rabbits actually might be the second-best candidate for these window-fixed environments. They might need a soft solid floor as compared to the wire mesh one and a nice shady oasis within to let them cool down. If all of that is in place, then try it with a bunny.
And then there are ferrets, the well-known escape artists of the indoor pet bunch. The problem with using a catio for them is making it escape-proof. These Houdini’s might be able to figure out how to get out if you don’t have every link of your fence together. So, not recommended.
And, in my opinion, just keep hamsters and guinea pigs in their cages.
